Career History

Mariano Albera is the Chief Technology Officer of Checkout.com, where he leads a technology organisation of more than 600 people responsible for the company’s global payments platform. He joined Checkout.com in 2020 as Senior Vice President of Engineering before becoming CTO in 2023, and has played a central role in scaling the company’s engineering capabilities as the business has expanded internationally.

Before Checkout.com, Albera was CTO of Expedia Partner Solutions, overseeing the technology supporting Expedia Group’s B2B travel platform. Prior to this, he served as CTO of OVO Energy and Group CIO and CTO for online systems at Thomas Cook, where he was responsible for a 250-person technology organisation supporting more than 100 transactional websites.

Earlier in his career, Albera spent five years as CIO of Opodo, managing a team of more than 60 engineers responsible for all IT activities within the group. He studied Information Technology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.

Checkout.com was founded in 2009 by Guillaume Pousaz and has grown into one of the world’s largest privately owned payments technology companies. In 2025, it processed more than $300bn in payment volume, up 64% year-on-year, while net revenue grew by more than 30% for the second consecutive year.

The company provides payment processing, acquiring and related technology to large digital businesses, helping merchants improve acceptance rates, manage fraud and process payments across markets and currencies. It now works with more than 1,000 enterprise merchants, including Uber, eBay, Spotify, Temu and Vinted.

Checkout.com has raised a total of $1.8bn across multiple funding rounds, including a $1bn round in January 2022 that valued the company at $40bn. In September 2025, it was valued at $12bn in its latest employee share buyback.
